Although one of Cambridge’s largest and most storied employers, CGT as well as the Chaplin family, strive to maintain a relatively low profile in the community. The company prefers to perform philanthropic deeds without a great deal of fanfare. The nearly 11,000-member Chaplin Family YMCA in Cambridge is one prime example of the family’s philanthropy. The Galt YMCA was experiencing financial difficulties in the 1970’s and was in need of financial assistance in order to continue operations. Jim Chaplin provided the leadership necessary for the Y to survive the times. Years later, he and his brother Gord provided the lead gift when the YMCA relocated to a state-of-the-art facility at 250 Hespeler Road in Cambridge. The family’s support is recognized in the naming of the facility. The concept of investing in the community is deeply engrained in the family.
